East Gwillimbury is a town in south-central Ontario, Canada, within the Greater Toronto Area in York Region. East Gwillimbury lies north of Queensway Markham East, south of Newmarket, east of Bradford West Gwillimbury, and west of Georgina Island. The town comprises the villages of Holland Landing, Sharon, Mt. Albert, and Queensville. East Gwillimbury is part of the Simcoe County District School Board.
East Gwillimbury was created as a township in 1820 from parts of West Gwillimbury and Whitchurch Township. In 1971, East Gwillimbury split from York Region to form its own regional municipality; however, it rejoined York Region in 1994. East Gwillimbury was known for its orchards, but is now a commuter town with most residents working outside of the municipality, primarily in Toronto.
East Gwillimbury is home to the East Gwillimbury Sports Complex which includes the East Gwillimbury Soccer Club, East Gwillimbury Eagles Hockey Club, and East Gwillimbury Lawn Bowling Club. The East Gwillimbury Farmers’ Market is held every Saturday from May to October in Sharon.
